Don’t write agenda-driven fiction.

What one person thinks is message or theme is what someone else might call agenda-driven fiction that preaches at the reader. If your whole purpose in writing a novel is to lecture to someone and point your literary bony finger at ne’er-do-wells, I suspect your writing may be subpar anyway. Folks who just want to whack other folks upside the head with a novel don’t tend to have a huge amount of patience for learning the craft of fiction.

Is that to say you shouldn’t have a theme to your writing? Not at all. I’m writing what could be termed an agenda-driven book after becoming alarmed over a trend I was seeing. I’m still creating great characters and giving it great structure and doing everything else I know to make it good fiction, but I can’t deny that there is a message I want to get across. Whether it will be too heavy-handed or not remains to be seen.

With your own fiction, don’t shy away from the things you’re passionate about, but be careful about wanting to use your book as a bludgeon.
